Podcast Takeover at Alone on the Couch

It's been a hot minute since I last moderated a panel or interviewed an artist. And this time, the challenge was a little different: I interviewed neither a musician or hip hop artist. I had the unique privilege of taking over the podcast, "Alone on the Couch (AOTC)," and interviewing the very multifaceted and talented host, KB. While KB isn't a rapper or musician, his brain works like a rolodex of verses, punchlines, and comic book references in rap. He introduced me to Lupe verses I didn't appreciate the first time, and peeled back the layers for me to truly grasp the lyrical genius behind the bars. So my goal in this interview with KB was to peel back the layers behind the host, and help the audience gain personal insight to who KB is as an individual, and explore his 'why' and 'how' as a creator and podcaster.

We talked about KB's roots in Texas, his big move to the Bay Area, his background in art and radio, and influences from comic books, hip hop, and video games. He gushed on his love for Lupe Fiasco and the importance of storytelling. We talked about being guided by the weight and morals and lessons and gems of stories that we carry. We talked about the hardships of being a creator. KB poured his heart out for his community of AOTC listeners. And we ended on a high note— that at the end of the day, if we honor the calling to create, then eventually its impact will ripple outwards to reach the people that the work is meant to reach.

I’m not saying I’m gonna change the world,
but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world. — Tupac Shakur

A huge thank you to KB for entrusting me with this personal interview, and for having me on as a guest on the Couch.
