About Joy

Joy Ng (she/her) is an Asian American creative consultant and writer, born and raised in San Francisco, California. Joy majored in Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, where she developed her research on hip hop and Asian American resistance, identity, and impact. Drawing from the roots of radical 1960s Bay Area social movements and the conditions that birthed hip hop culture, her research examines the intersection of hip hop as a vehicle for social justice within the Asian American experience in different spaces— from classrooms to rap shows. Joy’s goal is to contribute to the overall body of research and literature on the topic of Asian American Hip Hop.

Joy launched her blog, Hip Hop x Asian America in 2017. She created an 8-week blog series called “SoundBites,” featuring three Asian American artists every week. The series featured girl groups, DJs, women-identifying rappers, duos, music videos, and more. Her essay, “Friscopinos & the Native Immigrant,” and her short story, “Shaking Earth,” were published in an anthology titled, Endangered Species, Enduring Values: An Anthology of San Francisco Area Writers of Color (2018). Joy has been featured as an event host for local hip hop events; moderator for panel discussions; and as a guest on podcasts such as Bitch Talk Podcast; Storied SF; and Hip Hop Bruja, hosted by the legendary DJ Kuttin Kandi.

As a creative consultant, Joy provides creative direction, behind-the-scenes support, and hands-on assistance for artists, projects, and local events. She draws from personal experiences on and off the stage in event production and performance arts. Ranging from album concepts & release parties, to floor plans & itineraries, to discussions of equity & representation, Joy’s layered background in logistics, project management, community spaces, and close working relationships with performing artists have given her an advantageous skillset and insight. For more information and inquiries, see consultation.

Joy works full-time as a Housing Caseworker for a non-profit agency in San Francisco that provides social services for seniors and older adults with disabilities. Outside of work, she also provides behind-the-scenes support for Barangay Dance Company of San Francisco as the Managing Director.
